Health Benefits of Sunshine

“And God said, ‘let there be light’ and, there was light.” Sun, the source of light of the Solar System makes possible life on Earth. Vegetation needs sunshine to grow; vegetation produces oxygen and is the source of food for most animal life. Without sunlight there would be no life on Earth.

Although over exposure can cause skin cancer, it is now known that regular exposure to the sun’s rays improves health.

Our skin produces Vitamin D when exposed to the sun. Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and is important for bone health. It helps to prevent arthritis and osteoporosis. Vitamin D strengthens the immune system and has anticancer properties. Studies have shown that it lowers the risk for the development of cancers of the colon, breast and prostate.

Vitamin D is good for the heart. It plays a significant role in the prevention of heart disease. It also affects the body’s ability to make insulin and, thus, plays a key role in prevention of the onset of type 2 diabetes.

Sunshine is good for our physical and mental well-being. Sunshine stimulates the production of serotonin (a neurotransmitter) which promotes a good mental outlook. Low level of serotonin in the body is linked to depression. Sunshine also stimulates the pineal gland which produces melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that regulates sleep. A deficiency in melatonin can make it difficult to get to sleep and can make it harder to fall back to sleep when one is awaken during the night. Conversely, sufficient amount in the body enables us to have a good night sleep and, with the rest it provides, energizes our body

Get sunshine, be healthy.
